Introduction

The Mary Marshall Nursing Scholarship Fund was created in honor of the late Mary Marshall, a long-standing supporter of the Southeastern Virginia Chapter.Mary Marshall was a great friend of the Alzheimer's Association and she believed in the importance of nursing education. Her daughter, Sheila Niedweske, continues her legacy.This scholarship honors Ms. Marshall's commitment to nursing education and practice as well as her belief in an informed, knowledgeable and compassionate nursing staff.This memorial fund is being used to support scholarships for nurses interested in specialty training related to Alzheimer's disease and related disorders.

Mary Marshall Nursing Scholarship Fund was established in honor of the late Mary Marshall, a long-standing supporter of the Southeastern Virginia Chapter. A lifelong resident of Chesapeake, VA, and a great friend of the Alzheimer's Association, she believed in the importance and value of nursing education.

The fund supports nursing students at any accredited school who have been accepted into a nursing program and who are residents or citizens within our community boundaries: Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Suffolk or Franklin counties in Virginia. Eligible candidates must be full-time undergraduate college students who demonstrate financial need as determined by their respective colleges' financial aid office; have completed all prerequisite coursework required for entrance into an accredited baccalaureate degree program; have earned at least 12 hours toward their first bachelor's degree; plan to attend an accredited baccalaureate degree program throughout the upcoming academic year (fall 2018 - spring 2019); intend to pursue a career as either an RN or LPN/LVN upon completion of their undergraduate studies; demonstrate outstanding academic performance based on GPA (minimum 3.0 GPA) and ACT/SAT scores (minimum 23 composite); submit two letters of recommendation from faculty members familiar with applicant’s academic abilities and potential for success as nurses; submit essay describing reasons why applicant wants to pursue nursing as career choice along with how applicant would contribute to society through this career path after graduation from an accredited four-year institution; complete FAFSA form annually prior to fall semester registration using tax information from previous year unless otherwise notified by college’s financial aid office (copy required).

She was a long-standing supporter of the Southeastern Virginia Chapter, having served on its board for many years, both as president and then later as an honorary member. She also supported local chapters across the country with her generous donations and served on our National Board of Directors from 1981 until her passing in 1990.

Her daughter, Sheila Niedweske, continues her legacy.

Sheila Niedweske has made it her mission to help those suffering from Alzheimer's disease. She has worked tirelessly over the years both raising awareness about this tragic illness and fighting for research funding.

In addition to her work with the Alzheimer’s Association, Mary Marshall Nursing Scholarships are awarded annually by the state of Virginia through its Department of Health Professions. These scholarships provide financial support for students pursuing nursing degrees at one of its colleges or universities across the state.

This scholarship honors Ms. Marshall's commitment to nursing education and practice as well as her belief in an informed, knowledgeable and compassionate nursing staff.
