Introduction
Nursing scholarships are out there, and they can be an excellent way to help offset the cost of your nursing degree. However, it's not always easy to find them or figure out how you qualify for them. This article will cover some common forms of nursing scholarships and explain how to apply for one.
The ANNA Foundation
The ANNA Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization that provides scholarships to students who are studying to become nurses. The ANNA Foundation was founded by the American Nurses Association, and the scholarships are only available through universities that have an accredited nursing program.
The amount of your scholarship may vary depending on your school and major, but each year they will award over $1 million in scholarships for students who meet their requirements. The ANNA Foundation also offers academic support resources for students within their selected academic institutions such as career fairs and advising programs.
The California Nursing Students' Association
The California Nursing Students' Association offers a variety of scholarships to students seeking a nursing degree.
Scholarship categories include:
Alumni Scholarship Program (up to $1000 per year)
Community Service Award ($500)
JATC Local 58 Memorial Nursing Student Scholar ($1000)
Applicants must be current members of CNSA, submit an application form with two references by the deadline, and be enrolled full-time in a baccalaureate nursing program at any college/university within California. Applications for these scholarships are available on the CNSA website [here].
The Nursing Scholarship Program
Overview:
The Nursing Scholarship Program is a partnership between the National League for Nursing (NLN) and AARP. The scholarships are provided to students enrolled in an accredited nursing program who are interested in a career in gerontology or long-term care. The NLN provides three types of scholarships: $1,000 awards to students who hold membership with NLN; $2,500 awards to associate members; and $5,000 awards for retirees and former members who have been inactive for more than two years.
If you're eligible for one of these programs, visit www.aarp.org/nursing_scholarships to apply online or call AARP at 1-888-687-2277 between 10am and 9pm ET Monday through Friday (excluding holidays). You must submit your application by March 31st each year in order to be considered during that year's award cycle (July 1st - June 30th). If your application is approved by AARP, you'll also receive instructions on how to submit a formal request for financial aid from your school's financial aid office as well as information about how much scholarship money they will provide on top of what has already been awarded through this scholarship opportunity.*Note: Your school may require additional forms before finalizing any award package offered under this program*.
The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA)
The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) is a federal agency that administers programs aimed at improving access to health care for all Americans.
They provide funding to schools, providers, and students in order to help them meet their goals.
Students who are studying nursing can apply for scholarships through HRSA.
The Nurse Corps Scholarship Program
The Nurse Corps Scholarship Program is a competitive scholarship program available to students who intend to pursue a career as a nurse. Each year, the program offers competitive scholarships of up to $34,000 per year for nursing students. Eligible candidates must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents who plan to use the scholarship at an accredited school of nursing in the United States and Canada.
Nursing students can apply for funding through their school's financial aid office, or directly through an official application on the Army's website by May 31st each year (with exception for special circumstances). Funding is awarded on a first-come first-served basis; once funds are depleted they will not be replenished unless reapplied for during that same cycle (so if you want those sweet sweet Nurse Corps Scholarships then you better apply early!).
National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Research Service Award (NRSA) Predoctoral Fellowship
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Research Service Award (NRSA) Predoctoral Fellowship is a prestigious award, paying $57,280 annually and providing up to five years of funding for research training. The NIH NRSA program offers both domestic and international scholarships to people who have completed their bachelor's degrees but are not yet ready to start a PhD program.
The purpose of the NIH NRSA program is to provide support for students interested in pursuing doctoral degrees in biomedical or behavioral sciences at accredited institutions in the United States. Students must study at an institution that has been designated as an institutional recipient by the NIH Center for Scientific Review (CSR). In order to apply for this scholarship, you must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States; however, if you are selected as a fellow, you will receive citizenship status from your home country during your stay in America under this fellowship award. Your research must be conducted at an approved institution with an active NIH grant application on file when awarded; if it does not exist immediately after being awarded then one can be requested through CSR once they have received official notification that they have been selected as a fellow through their email inboxes after reviewing their applications thoroughly over time spent reviewing each one individually by hand before making decisions about each applicant's qualifications according to specific criteria set forth in advance by committee members across disciplines such as nursing faculty members who may serve on committees responsible for evaluating proposals submitted by applicants seeking awards like these ones offered annually."
National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Research Service Award (NRSA) Postdoctoral Fellowship
The NIH NRSA Postdoctoral Fellowship is for Ph.D.s and other doctoral-level scientists. The program provides funding for up to three years to support advanced training in the biomedical, behavioral and social sciences that builds on research experience gained during their doctoral programs.
The goal of this fellowship is to train individuals who will be prepared to assume leadership roles in academic life or industry upon completion of their postdoctoral work, thereby enabling them to contribute effectively as scholars and teachers; further the understanding of fundamental biological processes; translate that knowledge into technologies with therapeutic or diagnostic applications; or develop new approaches to prevention of diseases or treatment strategies focused on underserved populations.
NIH NRSA Postdoctoral Fellows are eligible for an exceptional stipend plus benefits, including health insurance coverage and eligibility for retirement plans after five years of continuous service with one employer (the NIH).
