The Lughati Foundation was founded by Drs. Gail and David Brunsman after they witnessed firsthand the challenges facing low-income patients with diabetes while practicing medicine at hospitals in Baltimore and Los Angeles. The foundation is dedicated to improving patient care by inspiring health professionals from diverse backgrounds who are committed to improving access and outcomes for disadvantaged populations as well as underserved communities nationwide.

The Lughati Foundation seeks students with an interest in primary care fields or patient advocacy/patient engagement programs such as but not limited to: family medicine, geriatrics, neurology (particularly dementia), psychiatry or emergency medicine; mental health; women’s health or public health nursing; neonatal intensive care nursing; hospice/palliative care nursing; community development work including home visiting programs; social work services that focus on populations with chronic illnesses such as diabetes mellitus (DM). Applicants must demonstrate financial need via FAFSA verification process as well as demonstrated leadership potential through involvement within their respective university network such as student government organizations or other extracurricular activities involving community service
